Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an inflammation of the gum line that can progress to the point of affecting the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. From least to most severe, the stages of gum disease are: gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. It is very important to see an experienced dentist like our expert, Upen J Patel, DDS at the first sign of
Carmichael gum disease.
Untreated Carmichael gum disease will progress and lead to more advanced periodontal disease which eventually will result in tooth loss. That’s why it’s important to see the dentist as soon as you’re able to. Gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums, is the earliest stage of periodontal disease. Symptoms can include some or all of the following: red, tender gums, swollen gums, bleeding gums, continuous bad breath, painful chewing, loose teeth, sensitive teeth and teeth that appear longer. Gum disease is caused by a sticky substance on the teeth that is mostly made up of bacteria called plaque. Every day teeth-brushing and flossing removes plaque; but only temporarily. Plaque redevelops within twenty-four hours of brushing one’s teeth. It’s very important to brush your teeth twice a day and to floss at least once a day to avoid the resurfacing of plaque. If plaque isn’t removed within two-three days, tartar will start to develop. Tartar makes it very difficult to brush away the plaque and tartar cannot be removed by regular brushing. The only way tartar can be effectively removed is by getting a professional cleaning. Therefore, the best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene on a regular basis, and to get a professional cleaning and a dental check-up twice a year. If periodontal disease does develop, there are a variety of treatment options available which include: professional cleanings, scaling and root planing, gum therapy and bone surgery.
